Gardening the Alaskan Way!

After a very long winter that never seemed to end, Monday, May 20th we experienced spring and by Thursday, May 23rd we were into the full swing of summer! It's amazing how the weather swings from one extreme to the other. In fact, it was Saturday, May 18th that we awoke to snow and temperatures that did not get above freezing. Then, one week later on May 25th, we hit 80 degrees and the leaves on the trees popped out!

With the warm weather, Mike and I rushed to get our spring/summer planting done. We bought plants, tilled up the garden and put the ever so tender seedlings into the ground in a matter of two days. I am still hoping that the soil is warm enough to support the tender roots and that no plant will suffer a cold death. As of today, three days later, every plant is still in stable condition and seems to have adapted just fine. This truly is gardening the Alaskan way!

My little greenhouse keeps the plants toasty warm.

Leaves were on the trees in less than 5 days.

80 degrees in the greenhouse! I may rent out space to anyone who wants a warm place to stay.

 Basil, anyone?

Broccoli will be good later this summer! I have 9 plants.

Over-sized Cabbage: Hopefully, it will beat the 27 pounder I had a few years ago.

 Mmmmm.....cucumbers! We have six plants!

Pumpkins: 2 Sugar Pumpkins and 1 Giant pumpkin

 Squash: 2 plants!

6 tomato plants will make for some good canning!
